Thai Diner feels like what would happen if a Thai chef spend enough time in a classic New York City diner and decided to create their own. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the restaurant combines Thai flavors with diner-style comfort foods.
When you enter, there’s a warm feeling: light colored wood, soft lighting, few plants, and scattered artworks and makes it feel like you’re eating at someone’s home.
I started with the Thai-rish Coffee, their take on an Irish coffee. Instead of heavy cream, they use coconut cream, which isn’t too sweet and balances really well with the whiskey. It’s rich and warming, and an easy way to ease into the meal.
We shared the Thai Disco Fries, which the waiter warned were spicy, and they were, but in the best way. Hot crinkle-cut fries are covered in a semi-spicy Thai-inspired curry gravy, then topped with herbs, garlic, nuts, and a lot of savory flavor. The heat builds gradually, enough that I needed a water refill, but never enough to overpower the dish.
For my main, I ordered the Coconut Chicken Thailandese, a massive, tender chicken breast coated and fried in a coconut breading. It’s juicy and salty, with just a subtle hint of coconut, and it comes with a bright, tangy cucumber salad with pickled onions that cuts through the richness perfectly.
Everything feels thoughtful at Thai Diner and next time I come back, I’m getting the Cheesesteak.
