Flipper’s is located at 337 W Broadway Unit A, New York, NY 10013

I follow a specific rule when I eat out at a breakfast-inspired spot: the dish must be savory. It’s a tough rule to follow when you have franchised and local breakfast joints that have amazing, sweet foods: pancakes, waffles, French toast, etc.

My mindset is like, sure I can make pancakes at home instead, why would I want to spend three times the amount to get them somewhere else. Or, when I eat at a breakfast spot and order something sweet, I want something savory or salty immediately after.

Ever since I went to Flippers, a breakfast joint designed around their pancakes over the weekend, I have regretted following my rule.

Going to Flippers was a game changer in what can be done in the world of pancakes and sweet breakfasts. Sure, I can make pancakes at home, but nothing beats the amazing combination of rich, tart, and buttery triple stack pancakes that Flippers offers.

Flippers is located at SoHo, NYC, just outside of the Canal St. subway station. It’s iconic yellow and retro diner type design make it feel like an old school bus, you can’t miss it.

Whether it’s a rainy evening or a Sunday brunch, here is how Flipper’s convinced me to break my savory-only rule with their amazing pancakes.

What We Ordered at Flipper’s

We ordered three meals, plus two drinks. Flippers like most restaurants have a short, very organized menu. Flippers separates their menu into several parts: Souffle Pancakes, Sweet Pancakes, Savory Meals, Burgers, and Toast. They also have parfaits and sides as part of their menu.

Because Flippers is obviously known for their pancakes, we each ordered 1 pancake, then shared 1 side between the two of us.

Of course, instead of ordering the souffle pancakes (which takes them 20 minutes to make, makes sense though), we opted into the Sweet Pancakes.

I ordered the Blueberry Cream Cheese Pancake while my significant other ordered her Strawberry Banana Pancake. Together, we ordered a side of Fried Chicken, for reasons being, Fried Chicken and pancakes are the best combination of breakfast food.

The Blueberry Cream Cheese Pancake is a staple at Flippers. It’s a three stack buttermilk pancake, with light, airy cream cheese, fresh blueberries, a blueberry jam, and topped with crushed pecan.

The Strawberry Banana Pancake is a three stack of buttermilk pancakes, fresh strawberries, fresh blueberries, sliced down the middle banana topped with crushed almond and maple syrup.

The Blueberry Cream Cheese Pancake was a mix of tart and richness all in the same bite. The fresh blueberries mixed with an acidic blueberry jam added a splash of color to the whipped cream cheese topping that was not only full of air, but rich which became the base for all the tartness from the fruit. Then, adding walnuts was the cherry on top – the last bit of nutty crunch that I got from eating these pancakes just made me smile so much.

However, when eaten with the fried chicken, I really wished I can make this at home. The fried chicken at Flappers are these little bites of chicken, similar to Japanese chicken karaage, except without the soy sauce marinade. It was a pure, bite-sized, buttermilk fried chicken. It’s crispy, juicy, and that savory flavor with a sweet pancake felt like heaven.

Considering our total bill with a tip (plus a hot coffee and a bubble tea), came out to $77, I would definitely come back to treat myself. This definitely is not your weekly brunch spot, but it’s definitely a if you need a breakfast place in New York City, this is it.

Unfortunately, because my New Years Resolution is not to repeat eating out at a NYC restaurant, I’m not allowed based on my rule to come back. Another bad rule I have decided too early to follow.
