There’s something about a simple hamburger steak that hits the spot. When I was in Japan, I randomly decided to go to Denny’s, and Denny’s in Japan is a very different experience compared to the ones in the U.S. A hamburger steak is juicy, flavorful, and served with rice instead of a bun, so here’s my version.

For my version, I went with a 3:1 ratio of ground beef to pork, and along goes onions, panko, eggs, and milk.

After you form these patties, grill or pan fry to get it crispy, and serve with fresh mixed greens and rice.

Ingredients
  • 300 g ground beef
  • 100 g ground pork
  • 1/2 onion finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for grilling
  • Cooked white rice for serving
  • Mixed greens for serving
Directions
  1. In a large bowl, combine 300g of ground beef and 100g of ground pork in a 3:1 ratio.
  2. Add the finely chopped 1/2 onion to the meat mixture, ensuring it’s evenly distributed.
  3. Stir in 1/4 cup of panko breadcrumbs into the meat mixture.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 egg and 1/4 cup milk, then pour it into the meat mixture.
  5. Season the meat mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Gently mix everything together until just combined.
  6. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into round, flat patties.
  7. Heat a grill or skillet over medium heat and add a little oil to prevent sticking.
  8. Place the patties on the grill or skillet and cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked through and golden brown.
  9. While the patties are cooking, prepare your serving plates by adding a scoop of cooked white rice and a handful of mixed greens.
  10. Once the patties are done cooking, plate them alongside the rice and greens.
